Tuesday, 4 November, Rarotonga, Cook Islands

Even though the skies provided a genuine tropical downpour all night, we slept very soundly, recovering from our long trip plus a bit of jet lag. We had breakfast in the cafe, as the buffet is provided as part of our lodging price. They have an excellent selection of breads, jams, peanut butter, vegemite (no thanks), yogurt, fruits, and cereals. We had no problem getting full each morning.

We were then picked up for our tour of the Highland Paradise Cultural Center, where the owner, a descendant of one of the chiefs of long ago, told us about the history of the island and its peoples, including cannibalism of enemies after battles on some occasions.   She had been an accountant in Sydney for twenty years, but decided to come back to her roots to run the Cultural Center that her father had built on his land. After her talk and a short DVD, we all put on plastic ponchos to go out to tour the historic and cultural parts of the property.  It rained the whole two hours, much of it pouring hard. After the tour we went back to their covered patio area and had an excellent lunch of chicken, local salads, and fresh papaya (popo).

We returned to our bungalow and later the rain stopped for a while. Gail snorkeled and I walked in the water. The lagoon was so clear, and shallow, we could both see a variety of fish, sea stars, sea cucumbers, and corals. Later we went to Wigmore's store for ice cream, the best deal on the island. This general store and gas station has excellent ice cream, providing two gigantic scoops for three dollars. Later we watched the sunset on the beach, had some supper, and read and slept.  No television and no radio, just electricity and comfortable beds.
