Wednesday, 5 November, Rarotonga, Cook Islands We got up early, now that we are caught up on sleep, and went snorkeling before breakfast. The water was calmer and the tide lower than the day before, so we could see even more varieties of fish. We particularly loved the bright blue sea stars, which have five legs and almost no center body. Gail also saw a moray eel, but since it was somewhat hidden under a rock I couldn't see it. When we did go to breakfast one of the staff came up to us and asked if we wanted to know who won the election. We weren't surprised at the result, of course. We waited for the bus that goes around the island on a one hour loop (about 20 miles). One runs clockwise and one anti-clockwise, so since we were almost exactly opposite Avarua, the one real town, we didn't care which we got. However, while we were waiting, some other folks who were staying at the Palm Grove had a van and stopped to give us a ride into town. We then went to the Police Station first, so I could get my Cook Islands Drivers License. The fee had just gone from ten to twenty dollars, but since they use the NZ dollar, which was about 58 US cents at the time, I didn't hesitate to get it as a souvenir, even though we're not renting a car or a scooter. We went to a wifi hotspot and spent a few dollars to upload some pictures from the iPhone to the website and post a few brief emails to family and friends to let them know we'd really arrived safely and were having a wonderful time. We bought some singlets (tank tops), some board shorts and some flipflops so that I'd have better attire for the beach. We had an excellent lunch at Trader Jack's on the beach and then took the bus back to the cottage. Once again, we walked the quarter mile down to Wigmore's for our ice cream and watched the sunset. After our large and late lunch, we just had some snacks for supper and went to bed early. Back to itinerary (trip home page)
