Thursday, 27 November, Christchurch, NZ

Today (or tomorrow, really) it is Thanksgiving Day in the USA. We know they’ll have a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner this evening for the occasion. We docked at the Lyttelton Harbor early in the morning.  After breakfast in our cabin, we left on our morning tour, passing through the tunnel into Christchurch and on to the Antarctic Centre. There we saw blue penguins walking, nesting, and swimming; rode the Haaglund snow vehicle over bumps and through several meters of water; and spent some time in the “Antarctic Storm Room”, which actually only went down to a temperature zero Fahrenheit. We bought some presents for grandchildren and a new rain jacket for me, as well as the obligatory postcards. After we finished that tour we were picked up by an old internet friend, Kevin Adams, who is a special librarian in Christchurch for a research agency. He took us out into the country 30 miles or so where we lunched at a little country tavern. We were late enough they didn’t have a lot of food left, but we had meat pies and sausages, along with hot tea. There was one brownie left, so Gail won it.

We returned to town through the beautiful countryside, and Kevin showed us some of town before dropping us at the square in the CBD. Christchurch was planned by early settlers to be a replica of Christ Church College at Oxford. The square is thus dominated by the gothic Christchurch (Anglican) Cathedral, which we visited and admired. They have a high tower, so I paid the $5.00 fee to climb the 134 steps to the top, from which I waved to Gail in the square below. I even received a certificate “signed” by the Dean of the Cathedral for the accomplishment, and naturally purchased a few more postcards. Gail got in line for the shuttle bus back to the ship while I ran over to the Starbucks across the square to get some sweets and coffee to rejuvenate her. Supper indeed offered turkey and dressing, but I chose steak instead. Another wonderful day.
