Wednesday, 3 December, Melbourne, VIC, AU We arrived under grey skies, but the day turned out to be beautiful in all respects. The harbor is spectacular, and the skyline is even better. Melbourne reminds us of Vancouver (minus the mountains) and Sydney reminds us of San Francisco. We started our tour with a view of a small part of Melbourne as we headed out for the Ballarat area through pretty fields. The first stop was at a wildlife park where we got to see, feed, and pet kangaroos, emus, and koalas. We also other birds and several wombats and a salt water crocodile. After we left the park we went to Ballarat, which is a contemporary town, but has the historical mining town area of Sovereign Hill as well. We went to Sovereign Hill to tour the attractions, as well as to have lunch. We had pies for lunch, as well as some pastries afterwards. We visited the part of the old gold mine that is available for touring, saw a group of redcoats fire their muskets, visited the library, and saw, but didn't ride, the stagecoach that goes around town. The tour ended with a tour of contemporary Ballarat and then the 90 minute ride back to the ship. The day ended with the last formal night of the cruise. Back to itinerary (trip home page)
