Thursday, 4 December, At sea between Melbourne and Sydney, AU

Although seas were somewhat rough last evening during and after dinner, we awoke to calm seas and light breezes.  We had a light breakfast delivered (cereal and coffee) and Gail started a load of laundry before it got busy. I dressed for the Susan G. Komen 5K Walk around the deck.  I did my 11 laps, plus a bit more, though the 5K is just under 11.  We all got a Tshirt with a pink ribbon on it, as well as a pink bracelet (like the yellow ones many people have).  Gail sat in a deck chair and watched for a while, but then the captain announced whales had been sighted, so she went to watch them from a better vantage point. I saw a couple of them myself as I was walking.

We went to play bridge after lunch, but the people we had thought we were playing with never showed up, and there wasn't room in the duplicate bridge group. We went back up on deck as the captain announced that a helicopter was coming to the ship to take someone with a serious medical problem to a hospital on shore. We watched the helicopter for 30 minutes or so.  Although we couldn't see all the details, it seems that they first dropped off some personnel to prepare the patient for transport, meanwhile hovering right outside of our cabin veranda. After 20 minutes or so, they came back to the ship and picked up the patient and their staff, and headed off towards Sydney very quickly.  Of course we don't know who or what happened, but it did make for an interesting afternoon. Later Gail played the slots for a while and I worked on getting pictures and text ready for uploading when we got a net connection again.

The last dinner included the chefs and serving staff parading around the dining room doing tricks and singing, and after supper marching in with baked Alaska for all. After dinner we packed up our bags to put them outside of our cabin before midnight, so they could all be picked up for our departure from the ship the next morning.
