Friday, 5 December, Sydney, NSW, AU

We didn't get up at 400am to see us come into Sydney Harbor.  Even if we had, there wouldn't have been a lot to see in the dark. But when we got up at 545 we were docked in Sydney and it was starting to get light, we pulled the curtains and there was the Opera House.  Right there, almost like we could touch it. We had room service breakfast and about 800 we went up to the Crow's Nest to see the view of the city. We could see our hotel and that confirmed that we could walk there, as it was less than a half mile away. The disembarkation was very quick and easy, so we left the ship, went down to get our bags, and started hauling them down the street to the Marriott. They didn't have a room ready for us, so we checked the bags with them and went to Starbucks a block away for some coffee and reading the newspaper.  You get a brief "newspaper" on the ship that is about 4 typed pages of NY Times extracts, so it was good to get a real newspaper again. By the time we went back to the hotel about noon, they had a room ready with an Opera House view, as requested, so we went up to enjoy the view.  After a bit I ran down to a little deli next door for sandwiches and took them back to the room. We ate them and took a nap for a while, since we'd been pretty short on sleep the last couple nights.

In the early evening we walked a mile to the King Street Wharf for a dinner harbor cruise that had been prebooked. It had an excellent buffet and we started the tour as the sun was setting and finished it in full darkness with beautiful lights on the Opera House, the Harbor Bridge, and all of the high rise buildings in the city. Fortunately we'd had the nap so we could enjoy it all. It was a long day, but a wonderful one.
