Tuesday, 9 December, Sydney to Melbourne, AU This was a moving day. Not emotionally, just physically. We got up fairly early and I went to the ATM, mailed some postcards, and got some breakfast to take back to the room. About 1000 we checked out and got a cab to the airport for our Qantas flight to Melbourne. All of that was very simple with no problems. Although they have flights back and forth between Australia's two largest cities (depends on whom you ask and when as to which is a bit ahead of the other) every half hour, this one was surprisingly on a 767, which was full. Apparently some of the flights are with smaller aircraft. The cab ride from the airport was interesting, with a sharp young Pakistani driver (with excellent English) who has been in Melbourne for ten years since coming here for University. He was able to leave "one of the places where the troubles are" to get to Melbourne. We checked in to the Westin and have a fine room on floor 2 (which is actually 3, since they start with G). For supper we walked around the area in the rain to see what we could find, and finally got to a Wagamama Noodle House, which was very nice, but a little expensive and a little slow. Apparently this chain started in London, and the name is a Japanese word that means "spoiled child". We had guessed it was some sort of Aboriginal word, and never could have guessed the meaning in Japanese. The waiter didn't know why that name was chosen. This was a day that turned out much easier than we expected. Back to itinerary (trip home page)
