Saturday, 13 December, Melbourne, AU

The rain had continued all night and was continuing all day as well. It turns out that Melbourne had received a record rainfall for one day in December yesterday. The storm has continued to bring fairly high winds as well.  The high temperatures have continued to be in the upper teens (mid sixties Fahrenheit). We try not to complain, since most of southern Australia is in a ten your drought, with serious water rationing and so forth. You only get water in a restaurant if you ask for it. Fancier places will only serve bottled water, but more moderate ones will give you tap water in a glass.

We decided to ignore the rain, put on our jackets and headed out to explore some more. We took the City Circle Tram to a stop about three blocks from the Queen Victoria Market, which has been an open air market, though mostly under cover, for over 130 years.  Some of it, including the Meat, Fish and Rabbit Building,  goes back even further.  We wandered around for a couple of hours, including stopping for a while to eat a meat pie, a spinach roll, a chocolate eclair, and a custard tart. When Gail got tired she sat on a bench and was chatted up by an interesting Iranian gentleman. They talked for a long time while I shopped, buying some fridge magnets of Australia, some fudge for Gail, a pair of black socks (to go with the tux on the ship, I wore white ones on the last trip), and a short sleeve shirt. We then went back through the rain several blocks and caught another tram back to the hotel area. A quick stop for coffee at Starbucks and we were back in the room for reading and writing and uploading pictures. We also watched In Bruges, a wonderful 2008 film, on the pay TV channel. One more trip out for Hungry Jack's, the Burger King franchise (more or less) for a whopper and a whopper junior and some more bottles of water. Now we're packing for tomorrow's trip to Sydney.  A relatively low key day, but very enjoyable.
