Sunday, 15 December, Sydney, AU

This is our catch up day, thanks to Air Tahiti Nui canceling the flight we'd booked to Tahiti today. So, we have an extra day at the Airport Mercure in Sydney, which actually is pretty helpful. We slept late and about 1100 I took a cab to a post office about two miles away. We'd prepared a box of things to send home, so I took it down there, had them tape it up and label it, and it is on the way home, all for a small fortune.  But at least it gets our bags back within limits and reduces the amount of stuff we're hauling around.  The airlines are getting very fussy on weights of checked items, and also of carry on items.  We've actually been pretty conservative on buying gifts or souvenirs, because of money and also because of the hauling or shipping costs.

After standing in a long line and finally getting the package on its way, I walked down the street looking for some lunch. I was in the old suburban town of Rockdale, which had an old "downtown strip" of dozens of shops of all sorts.  Most of the stores and people were middle eastern, obviously Lebanese, Iraqi, Jordanian, and so forth, based on their signs. A few storefronts down I found a beauty/barber shop, and stopped in. They said they could cut hair on both of us, and the charge was only $15 each.  So, I called Gail and had her take a cab down to the place. We both got our hair cut well and quickly, so we're ok on that until we get to Florida.  We sure didn't want to pay ship prices for a haircut if we didn't have to. We then stopped in to a little restaurant and had souvlaki and a spanokopita plus smoothies and coffee. It was very nice.

Gail said she felt up to walking back to the hotel, even though it was almost two miles, and partly a pretty steep hill.  We moved along slowly and made it, though Gail was pretty exhausted. On the way we'd stopped in another shop and bought a half kilo of baklava, which I'm sure more than replaced any calories we burned on our walking. Later we had supper in the Bistro Bar again, and I put up more pictures on the web.  A good day of catching things up.
