Tuesday, 16 December, Sydney, AU to Papeete, Tahiti This was another long travel day. We got up at 430am to catch a 510 shuttle to the airport for our flights to Papeete, Tahiti. Check in was complicated slightly by our bags being overweight, particularly our carry on bags, which we'd not had weighed before. We finally shuffled things around enough, and got it close enough to satisfy the lady, by checking one of the bags that is usually carry on, and putting more stuff in it and making the remaining carry on light enough. Confusing? Yes, but we made it, despite worrying by Gail that the "carry on" that wasn't might get lost, causing a host of problems. But nothing got lost. We were checked in by 540, but then had to wait for the entrance to Customs and Security and the gates to open at 600. Those steps were all easy, with the security for international flights from Australia about the same as for their domestic flights described before. The only difference appeared to be that only ticketed passengers could get through, but we kept our shoes on, didn't show our bags of liquids, and so on that we would have done in the USA. On the Qantas flight to Auckland we had a nice breakfast and Gail watched a movie while I read. Then we had almost 4 hours in Auckland's international transfer area where we got a Burger King (it is only in Australia that they are Hungry Jack's) for lunch got seats for the flight, and waited and read. Air Tahiti Nui also provided a great flight, dinner, a movie, and video poker for Gail to play after the movie. Arrival on the next page. Back to itinerary (trip home page)
