Wednesday, 31 December, At Sea

Gail continued to fight her bronchitis, without much success. She had spent much of the night sitting up so she could breathe more easily, coughing much of the time. She finally took a sleeping pill and then slept until 1130, but still felt bad. We had some lunch, but she was coughing enough that we didn't even go to play bridge, the first day we'd missed on the trip. Organized duplicate bridge is only on sea days. We spent the afternoon reading our various books. Dinner was formal for New Year's Eve, but Gail definitely wasn't up to two hours of dinner, spreading germs to our tablemates. We did go up to have some supper in the buffet, They were all decorated for the occasion, and the staff had on hats, were blowing horns and whistles, and so forth, but we were one of three couples in the place. We assume almost everyone else went to the formal dinner in preparation for various parties in the lounges. On the way back to our cabin I stopped at a shop to get Gail some cough drops and another crossword puzzle book. We just read and watched a bit of TV, and Gail was asleep long before the start of the new year.
