Monday, 5 January, At Sea

It was a foggy day off of the coast of Peru and Ecuador, like it usually is there due to the Humboldt Current bringing cold water from the Antarctic to mix with the hot air coming off of the desert. It did clear up somewhat later in the day. We spent the day heading north along the Peruvian coast, reaching the Ecuador border about midnight.  Gail spent the day in the cabin, following the doctor's directions. I discussed the Quito trip the next day with the tour desk, and despite their best efforts they couldn't get the refund on Gail's fee. We'll deal with it later with the trip insurance company. We hope they'll also cover the out of country medical expenses. At least they're supposed to. Gail and I discussed the Quito trip and finally decided that I'd go ahead and go on the sixth and leave her alone on the ship. She's able to take care of herself and help is always available. I could tell her about it and bring back lots of pictures. Gail was a bit worried that I might not get back from Quito, as the people who flew to Machu Picchu were delayed two days in returning to the ship. We went to the buffet for supper and watched part of the Fiesta Bowl before giving up on it and going to bed early.
