Wednesday, 7 January, At Sea

When we woke up late, Gail was still coughing and wheezing. Since we were supposed to have her return for a follow up anyway, we went to see her at 900 to see what she thought. Since Gail was still coughing and wheezing a lot, the doctor decided to "give her the works", including blood work, electrocardiogram and an xray. Those showed that she was still retaining quite a bit of fluid in her lungs, as well as fluid elsewhere on her body, such as her legs, but that there weren't heart problems, pneumonia, or other worse things. At least that was good to hear. The doctor gave her more prednisone, as well as lasix and potassium chloride. She also emphasized that Gail should order from the salt free menu in the dining room, and try to minimize salt elsewhere on the ship. Since most of the food is quite salty, that was hard to do. The real irony was that when we went to lunch after 3 hours with the doctor, was that it was all "low salt", such as shrimp, salty soup, corned beef, and so forth.

Gail did take all her meds and inhalers and nebulizer as directed, as she had been doing, and just rested the remainder of the day. I had paid to do the Susan G. Komen Walk for Breast Cancer in the morning, but the hours in the doctor's office killed that idea. I'd done a lot of walking already, so didn't feel bad that they'd already given me my hat with a pink ribbon on it. I'd earned it.
