Thursday, 15 January, Key West, Florida

This was a very hard day. We didn't get much sleep last night, as about 1000pm we got a call from Chris and Joy that our little Pom, Angel, had died. She had had supper, was playing with Joy's Chihuahuas, and all of sudden just shook, fell over, twitched for a minute, and was gone.  Chris took her to the vet, but of course it was too late. The vet said it was probably a heart attack. We were thankful that she didn't suffer a long and painful death, but still are very sad. Gail hasn't cried yet, but I'm sure she will, when she gets home and Angel isn't at her feet, if not sooner. We felt particularly bad for Chris and Joy, as they were the ones caring for her and felt responsible. But of course there isn't anything that they did wrong, just that it was her time. We called Chris when he was still at the vet's office, so we were able to have the vet take care of things and pay them with credit card over the phone.

After 300am we finally got to sleep and slept very late. When we woke up in the morning we looked out our sliding door and saw that there was a very large cruise ship docked right outside. We knew ships docked there, but this was a real surprise.  About 1100 we walked about ten blocks to the Blue Heaven restaurant, about which we'd heard great things. It was indeed excellent, sitting outside in a courtyard under big trees. Service was fine and the food was wonderful. It helped to turn the day around for us. We then went to the Hemingway House, where we spent more than an hour, really enjoying the displays, seeing his study where he wrote, and so on. He had the first swimming pool in the Florida Keys, and always had lots of cats around. The property is now fenced so that the sixty cats can't escape. We walked back and enjoyed the public art in the area, as well as all of the old, historic buildings. Later we walked across the street to a little place and bought Cuban sandwiches and Key Lime Pie to take back to eat when we got hungry. After eating in our room later, I went out and got us an "extra dessert", ice cream. We really will get back on our food plans soon.
