Friday, 16 January, Key West to Aventura, Florida We had gone to bed early the night before, but like the previous night didn't get a lot of sleep. There was a fire alarm about 1100pm that woke us up. We just threw some clothes on and stepped out on our patio to wait it out. There were two French ladies with a pet Shih Tzu in the next room, so we talked a while and played with their little dog, even though it made me cry. After half an hour we went back in and finally got to sleep again, quite a bit later. Once we woke up we got our things together and headed back up the Keys towards the Miami area. We'd heard locals talk about the Cracked Conch in Marathon, so we stopped there for lunch. It was such a little out of the way kind of place that we almost missed it. They were very busy and service was slow, but the food was worth waiting for. Heading on up the Keys we enjoyed seeing all of the islands and channels, and the multitude of bridges that make the whole highway of over 100 miles possible. The longest bridge is seven miles, although most are much shorter. We decided to take the toll road back towards Miami, and that saved us at least an hour over the two lane through the Everglades. We stopped to buy a decent Florida map at one pit stop, and had no trouble getting to our hotel in Aventura by 530. Aventura is a suburb that is about half way between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, and a few miles from the beach. The weather was cool and breezy, and we didn't feel any great desire to head to the beach. We had a simple dinner of sandwiches that I got from the Italian restaurant across the street and brought back to the room. Gail is still recovering enough that she hasn't recovered her normal energy, and is resting more to keep getting better. Back to itinerary (trip home page)
