Thursday, 22 January, Orlando, Florida Despite freezing weather yet another morning, we headed off to EPCOT Center to meet Jeremy, an old friend of Cinda's who works for Disney at the entrance. Jeremy works for Disney and was able to get us in to the park at a reduced price, as well as giving advice on what attractions to see, which was very nice. We spent the day going on rides and seeing displays, and, of course, eating. Following Jeremy's advice, we went to Soarin' first. That ride simulates soaring in a hang glider. You sit in a seat, are lifted in the air, and watch a wrap-around movie that makes you feel like you're soaring over all sorts of beautiful sights in California. We saw Yosemite, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, and many other wonderful places. The seats tipped back and forth and side to side just enough to really add to the feeling of soaring, without being frightening. Later we went to the Mission Space simulation, and chose the intense version over the mild version. You and three others are put in seats that clamp you in completely, and then go on a mission to Mars. The ride does give you several Gs of pressure at liftoff, and then a near weightless feeling at another point. Although I'm not bothered by motion sickness, I got a bit of queasiness for perhaps the first time in my life. After we got off Gail wanted to sit a while to get re-oriented, and I didn't mind a bit. Later I went on the Fast Track "test car" ride, which Gail didn't go on, as she thought that it was actually driving a car of some sort. It was a roller coaster ride in a car of six people, which took you over bumpy roads, tight turns, and so forth. It was fun, but nothing overwhelming. The park wasn't crowded at all due to the cold weather, as well as the poor economy, I'm sure. We had a nice bratwurst lunch in the Germany area, and then went to the United States area to see the fife and drum corps, the choral group, and the wonderful and inspiring movie of American history. The singers got the group to sing along and the leader of the fife and drum corps had all the small children come forward and help to lead the Pledge of Allegiance before they played the Star Spangled Banner. It was all wonderful, though we were disappointed in the crowd members who didn't stand for the pledge or the anthem and didn't remove their hats. Later we went to the Morocco area and went to their restaurant. We had two appetizers and two desserts and watched the belly dancer. By then it was getting pretty cold out and we were getting tired, so we decided not to stick around in the cold for another three hours to see the fireworks. After stopping for some gift shopping at Mouse Gear, we headed on home for some rest. A couple hours after we got home, Gail was in pain from a urinary infection. Fortunately I was able to search the web and find a clinic that was open until midnight, and better yet was only four miles away. We headed off to it, which was an adventure since it was near Downtown Disney and there was still quite a lot of traffic. The clinic was hidden off of the street a ways, but with directions from them on the cell phone, we finally found it. They weren't too busy, and Gail was able to see the doctor fairly quickly. They were next to an all night drug store and we were also able to get the drugs quickly. When we got home she started the pills immediately and we sat up for a few hours while they started to work and eliminate her terrible pain. Another "day of adventure", partly planned and partly unplanned. Back to itinerary (trip home page)
