Sunday, 25 January, Orlando, Florida to Ka'anapali, Maui We got up at 400 am and left for the airport by 530. We didn’t have any problems returning the car, checking in, or going through security. Fortunately we went straight to the gate, since it turned out the 745 am flight was leaving at 700. We’d not been told of any change by phone or email, so we were quite irritated. When we got to the gate the plane was almost completely boarded, but at least we got our assigned seats. The 4.5 hour flight to Phoenix was fine, though we learned that USAir doesn’t provide ANY food or drink free on the plane, even water. Bottles of water were two dollars each, so we bought some water and a couple of snack boxes for five and seven dollars each. The change of planes in Phoenix was quick, and the flight to Maui was long, about 6.5 hours. Finally we arrived “at home” in Maui, and were greeted by nice weather in the mid seventies. Our luggage arrived and I got the car without too much delay. I ended up with a Subaru Forester, which other than being a bit large, is very nice. We won’t be driving much, so we won’t worry about using too much gas. Gas, like everything else here, is expensive, about 2.50 a gallon. When we went to the store we found the prices are even higher than they were in 2007, with a half gallon of milk now up to $5.99. We got to the Ka’anapali Beach Club and found out that our request for an oceanfront room had been met. We’re on the first floor (one floor above the beach) and can sit on the lanai or in the living room and watch the whales spouting, and occasionally breaching or diving. Since we were exhausted from being up 22 hours, half of them in the air, we went to bed early and didn’t set an alarm clock. Back to itinerary (trip home page)
